Gurgaon: A 18-year-old salesgirl of a Patanjali store in Sector 21 was shot dead late Monday evening by a man who allegedly had been stalking her for the past few months.
The family members of Gunjan Dutt, who was pursuing her graduation through distance eduction from Delhi University, said a man named Pawan alias Matru had been harassing her for quite some time and they often asked him to stay away from her.
Based on her family’s complaint, police have registered a case of murder against Matru at Palam Vihar police station under IPC section 302 (murder) and relevant sections of the Arms Act.
Police said on Monday, Gunjan was leaving the shop when Pawan fired two shots at her from close range. After shooting Gunjan, the accused fled the spot with his accomplice, who was waiting for him on a motorcycle. The shooting in the busy market shocked shoppers and led to some panic.
An eyewitness later told police that not a single person rushed to help the woman, who lay critically wounded for more than 20 minutes.
It was only after police came that Gunjan was taken to Columbia Asia hospital in Palam Vihar, where she succumbed to injuries after an hour.
Gunjan had been working part time at the Patanjali store since the last six months and she had told her parents about Pawan harassing her.
In his complaint, Gunjan’s father Chander Dutt alleged that Pawan had been stalking his daughter for the past few months. The family lives in Shanker Vihar area of Palam Vihar for the last several years and hails from Ambedkar Nagar in Uttar Pradesh.
Gurgaon police said it has registered a case and all aspects are being probed. Investigating officer sub-inspector Krishna said a postmortem examination of the body was conducted on Tuesday and the body has been handed over to the family.
Assistant Commissioner of Police, Palam Vihar, Jai Singh said a case of murder has been registered and police have formed six teams to investigate the matter.
“The complaint lodged by the family on the basis of which the FIR was registered has mentioned that the accused had been harassing the woman and stalking her. We will look into the issue and things will become clearer once we question the accused,” said Singh, adding that action would be taken in case the complaint was overlooked.
The father of the victim has also alleged in the complaint that the accused Pawan had threatened his daughter in Chauma village market, and despite a complaint at the Bajghera police post, no action was taken. He also alleged that Pawan was coaxing the girl to marry her, and was infuriated by her refusal to accept his advances.
