Police data for the first nine months of this year shows that six rape and 14 molestation cases have been reported in the capital every day. Meanwhile, 364 rape cases of girls aged 10 and below were reported in 2013 and 2014, according to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data. While NCRB data on crimes against children is not yet available for this year, child rights’ activists claimed that the crime rate against toddlers is on the rise. “The total number of cases registered by Delhi Police under the POCSO Act between December 2012 and March 2014 is 1,492. The maximum number of cases under POCSO Act were registered in the police district of Outer Delhi (226) followed by West (200) and Southeast (176),” said a senior police officer.
Police claimed to have solved almost 90 per cent of the rape and molestation cases and said most of them were committed by persons known to the victim. According to recent data by Delhi Police, 1,557 cases of rape and 3,876 molestation cases have been registered in various police stations across the capital till September 15. Last year, 1,551 rape cases and 3,076 molestation cases were reported. In 2013, atleast 1,636 rape cases and 3,515 molestation cases were reported in Delhi. “Most of the cases of rape and molestations have been solved and the accused arrested. As the accused is known to the victim in most cases, it makes prevention of such crimes comparatively more difficult,” said a police officer. Only a small percentage of the crimes were committed by strangers, he added.
